Washington, DC New Menu Report: 07/22/15

No matter where you go in D.C. you are never far from a high-end steak house, well designed wine list, or tempting menu, and this week’s menu report includes all three plus some discounted lunch menus and new dessert treats at a familiar stalwart on the dining scene. Escape the heat while you can and cool off at Cuban watering hole; sit back, enjoy a cold rum drink, and take a break, you deserve it.

Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar
Prime your cocktail appetite because Sunday, August 16 is National Rum Day and Cuba Libre will be hosting Rum Day Sunday to celebrate. During Happy Hour, from 5 to 7 p.m., you can sample 90 premium rums from Tortola, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Guyana for half-price. But wait; there’s more! From August 1 to August 31, you can also sample three new rum flights that feature aged and gran reserva rums from Trinidad and Nicaragua. The flights include the Cuba Libre, Rum Room Favorites, and the Whiskey Lovers Flight.

Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab
Back by popular demand, Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab is hosting their Sommelier Series and this week the theme is a wine lover’s tour of Italy. All week long, until Sunday, July 26, you can sample four stellar wines from Piedmont and Tuscany, including Ca’Marcanda Vistamare Tuscany 2013 ($14/3oz, $28/6oz), a wine that’s a perfect match with Joe’s famous stone crab. The 2013 Gaja Rossi-Bass Chardonnay Langhe ($18/3oz, $36/6oz) is wisely paired with the Alaskan Halibut. The third wine, Ca’ Marcanda Promis Bolgheri 2013 ($10/3oz, $20/6oz) sports a blend of Merlot, Syrah, that’s a foil to the rich flavors of Joe’s 16oz rib eye. For sheer elegance, the fourth wine, Gaja Dagromis Barolo 2010 ($19/3oz, $38/6oz) is 100% Nebbiolo, making it simpatico with Joe’s signature bone-in filet mignon.

Nopa Kitchen + Bar
After making her mark for eight years at Johnny’s Half Shell, pastry chef and visual artist Valerie Hill has made the move to Nopa Kitchen + Bar. For years, D.C. diners have been delighted with her coconut cake and warm banana pudding pie so we can’t wait to sample her pistachio cake with rose cream and rhubarb sorbet; raspberry and white chocolate bread pudding; and buttermilk panna cotta with blueberry compote, citrus peach puree, and Anson Mill’s cornmeal shortbread.

Republic
If you live in Takoma Park and Silver Spring in Maryland or Petworth in D.C. there’s yet one more reason to visit Takoma Park’s quaint heart: Republic’s new three-course lunch special they’re calling Straight Lunchin’. Priced at $16, it’s designed to get you in and out in an hour and be tasty. Choose from two courses and dessert Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for just $5, you can also order a mini beer or glass of wine. Some of the standout dishes include ancient grains salad with pomegranate, pistachios, and mint; wood grilled chicken with red beans, smoked bacon, avocado, and cilantro; and the vanilla crème brûlée with seasonal fruit.

Vehicle Registration Renewals

You will receive a renewal notice from DC DMV 60 calendar days before your current vehicle registration expires. You will receive your renewal notice by email if you have provided DC DMV with your email address. Your vehicle must have a valid inspection sticker to renew the vehicle registration. Also, to renew your vehicle registration, all outstanding debt to the District of Columbia must be paid.

If your vehicle inspection and registration stickers are expired, DC DMV will issue you a 5-day temporary registration. You must have your vehicle inspected before the 5-day temporary registration expires. Once it expires, you will not be issued another one. This is a one time only option per vehicle. The 5-day temporary registration may be obtained in-person at a DC DMV Service Center.

If you are a returning customer or need a 5-day temporary registration, then you may renew your registration or obtain the 5-day temporary registration online.

For last minute online renewals, DC DMV provides a temporary vehicle registration certificate that you can print and use for up to 45 days, until your registration sticker is received in the mail.

Vehicle registration renewals may only be completed either online or by mail. Information on both processes is available below.

Note: You may change your address online during the vehicle registration renewal process if you have a REAL ID or a Limited Purpose driver license or non-driver identification card. If your driver license or identification card was issued prior to May 1, 2014, you must update your address in-person at a DC DMV Service Center. Also, if you have received a temporary registration, then renew it online for it to become your valid permanent registration. You have the option to renew it for one or two years.

Online Vehicle Registration and Residential Parking Renewal

You may renew your vehicle registration online if you can satisfy all of the online eligibility requirements listed below. DC DMV complies with federal regulations regarding the use of credit cards, so to utilize the online services and pay with a credit card, use browsers with minimum version requirements, such as:

You may also change your address during this transaction if you are the primary owner of the vehicle. Co-owners listed on the vehicle registration must apply for their own changes of address. If you cannot satisfy all the online requirements, please visit a DC DMV service center to resolve the issues (i.e., address stop, dishonored check stop, etc.) that are preventing you from renewing online.

Although you can renew your vehicle registration online if it has been expired for fewer than 90 calendar days, please be aware that it is illegal to drive with an expired vehicle registration.

After you renew your vehicle registration online, you will be able to print the temporary 45-day registration. Place the temporary certificate on your vehicle dashboard, or on your vehicle windshield, and keep the current registration sticker on your windshield until your registration sticker arrives in the mail. If you are eligible for a residential parking permit (RPP), the online process will allow you to check a box to add RPP during the vehicle registration renewal transaction. If your RPP zone has changed or expired, you must remove the outdated/expired RPP sticker. Only one RPP zone sticker can be displayed. If you display more than one sticker, you may receive a ticket.

Online Vehicle Registration Requirements

You may renew your vehicle registration online if you have:

  • A vehicle registration that expires 60 calendar days from the date printed on your registration sticker, or a vehicle registration that has not been expired for more than 90 days.
  • A valid vehicle inspection. If your inspection is expired, you must pass inspection prior to renewing your registration. If both your registration and inspection are expired, you may visit a DC DMV service location for a no-fee 5-day registration to take your vehicle through inspection.
  • A valid DC DMV driver license or identification card.
  • Your current name on file at DC DMV.
  • Your current address on file at DC DMV. If you need to change your address, you may do so during this online vehicle registration renewal transaction only if you have a REAL ID credential. DC DMV will mail your vehicle registration to your current address on file at DC DMV.
  • A valid DC insurance policy for your vehicle.
  • A valid credit card. DC DMV accepts Visa and MasterCard. The DC Government does not accept American Express and Discover.

Please allow up to 15 business days to receive your product before contacting DC DMV. Additionally, you will not receive a temporary paper 45-day registration. If you want to renew your vehicle registration by mail and do not have the registration renewal notice, you can still renew by mail and must provide DC DMV with the following information:

  • DC vehicle tag number
  • DC driver license number or identification card number
  • Purpose of payments (vehicle registration renewal)
  • Current address
  • Telephone number
  • Exact payment amount for applicable fees. DC DMV does not accept cash by mail. If you pay by check or money order, please make all payments to DC Treasurer. If you are uncertain about the amount of your vehicle registration renewal payment, contact 311 for fee details.

Note: Your tag number must be included on your payment to ensure the correct vehicle registration is renewed.

Note: If you have a change of address or a name change, you cannot renew your registration by mail. You must visit a DC DMV service center location with the proper documentation to verify the changes if your driver license or identification card was issued before May 1, 2014. Information on name and address changes is available at the links below:

Since it normally takes 10 business days to process a mailed registration renewal, please allow sufficient time when mailing your renewal. Your renewed registration card and sticker will be sent to you at your DC DMV address of record by return mail.

America is Getting a (Legal!) Ayahuasca Retreat

Now that marijuana tourism is well and truly active in states like Colorado and Washington, the opening of the nation&aposs first legal Ayahuasca retreat, which happens next month in Washington state, seems somewhat, well, inevitable.

Ayahuasca is a plant that has been prized by indigenous Amazonian cultures for thousands of years. Known to bring about optic and auditory hallucinations, the drink made from the so-called "vine of death" or "yagé" is used primarily for healing and spiritual awakening. Celebrities like Sting, Lindsay Lohan, and Tori Amos have all spoken positively about the drug&aposs power, according to the New York Times, but, until now, it had always been illegal in the U.S., and those who wished to partake had to do so covertly or head to Peru or Brazil.

Ayahuasca Healings has held retreats in Peru for years, aimed at travelers interested in exploring what the website describes as "a doorway to inner worlds that allows us access to higher states of consciousness and the experience of spiritual awakening." Now adventurers don&apost need to bring their passport when they explore those "inner worlds."

While the Ayahuasca plant isn&apost illegal in the United States, per se, its active ingredient, known as D.M.T., is banned as a Schedule I drug, the same category as heroin and ecstasy. The U.S. retreat is able to skirt the issue (so far) by establishing themselves as an "independent Native American Church" and using their Constitutionally protected right of the free exercise of religion to imbibe what they call "Mother Ayahuasca," according to Death and Taxes Magazine.

That means that for the first time, parties intent on participating in the spiritual applications of Ayahuasca can try it out, legally, by making a "suggested donation" of $1,497 to $1,997, and heading to the church, which is located about 90 minutes outside of Seattle. Check out the daily schedule of events, including four Ayahuasca ceremonies in four days plus time in a "Native Indian Sweat Lodge" to enhance the experience.

Before you book your ticket, Ayahuasca Healings&apos website warns that, "Ayahuasca isn&apost a &aposmagic pill&apos or drink that will just heal you," but is simply "a tool in your healing, in your growth, and evolution." If you&aposre still curious, head here for more information.

Home Chef

Good for: People who love having options.

The details: Home Chef is one of the post popular meal kit delivery services out there, and it’s not hard to see why: The brand offers one of the most customizable meal kits and doesn’t limit you to just kits with fresh ingredients to cook up at home or one-pan reheatable meals. It gives you the option of choosing based on your needs and even has you narrow down your dietary preferences, whether you want to cut back on shellfish or go gluten-free. There’s an option to choose meals that are “ready in 15 minutes” if you’re truly starved for time, plus a menu for entrée-size salads or “premium” meals from the brand’s culinary collection that will make you feel like you’re eating gourmet.

Recipes are often simple but satisfying, like hearty steak and potatoes, sesame chicken, and salmon bagels, but also extend to international items like Vietnamese pork kebabs and Cuban steak burritos. Home Chef’s memberships are also flexible, in case you change your mind or want to press pause—you can cancel an order or take a break whenever you want. All the dishes are designed to take no more than 30 minutes to put together, and easy-to-follow recipe cards will show you how to make everything. If you’re worried about the waste involved with a weekly meal kit, all of the ingredients are delivered in recyclable packaging, with more instructions on the website that tell you exactly how to dispose of them. (Want to know more about Home Chef? One of our editors shares her experience with this healthy meal kit in her in-depth Home Chef review.)

Special dietary options: Recipes include vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, plus you can opt out of having wheat, dairy, soy, red meat, nuts, and more in your meals.

Availability: Nationwide, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.

Customer review: We had our first Home Chef meal this evening. Our 20-year-old son, no chef by any stretch of the imagination, followed the instructions for shrimp. He was chopping bok choy and sprinkling spices and browning shrimp like a pro. The meals were shipped beautifully. The produce looks great. The protein was great. We could not have gotten a better meal if we had gone out to a restaurant. Since we can't really go out to restaurants right now, what a treat to have a restaurant-quality meal at home prepared by a true amateur. And he had fun doing it! Tomorrow tacos, the next day scallops, next week who knows? —Chris

Cost: $10 per serving for dinner and $8 per serving for lunch. Shipping is free for orders over $40, and otherwise $10.
