Brand loyalty is one of the driving factors of commerce in America. For one reason or another, we get hooked into buying one brand of the same product over any other. For most people in America, ketchup is synonymous with Heinz, even though there are plenty of competitors out there and taste tests have shown that Heinz’s ketchup isn’t necessarily the best-tasting option.

But at the same time, in the past five years or so, more and more people have become increasingly conscious of what they put into their bodies, and many are turning away from their formerly favorite snacks and brands in favor of healthier alternatives. This has led to a boom in the healthy snack market — not to mention efforts by mainstream brands to stay with the times by, for example, replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar.

As a recent Ad Age article put it, “Families once reliably heaped their plates with products such as Stove Top stuffing from Kraft Foods, Hamburger Helper from General Mills and Kellogg cereals, along with similar products from other processed food titans. But now those consumers are increasingly migrating to smaller, upstart brands that are often perceived as healthier and more authentic.” Big food companies are increasingly trying to buy authenticity, as is evident in Kellogg’s purchase of Kashi, General Mills’ purchase of Annie’s Organic, and Hormel buying Applegate Farms.

Consumer trust is falling by the wayside, and even as big brands continue to claim that they’re healthy, we’re simply not believing them as unfailingly as we used to. That’s what we mean by trust: Do we buy into their claims uncritically, or do we question them and ask for more proof? Or, in a worst-case scenario for these big companies, are we abandoning them altogether in favor of healthy upstarts?

We rounded up the 20 most popular brands of chips, snack foods, cooking ingredients and condiments; and the 12 leading fast food brands, and want to know how your opinion of them has changed over the past five years, if at all. Taking paid surveys online is an easy task you can do to earn money in your spare time.

Survey companies work with businesses that need insight into new ideas or products before they hit the market. You’ll earn cash for answering questions that will help brands improve their products.

Filling out surveys for cash can be worth your time if you sign up for the right survey sites and implement a few helpful tips.

All you need is an internet connection and a computer or mobile device to get started.

Upright Vacuums

Upright vacuums make up almost half of the U.S. vacuum market, according to manufacturers, and they’re the best at deep cleaning carpet, according to our tests.

Our survey ratings cover 19 brands of upright vacuums. Only one of the upright brands in our survey, Soniclean, earns an Excellent rating for predicted reliability, although Sebo and Shark both earn a Very Good rating. (We’ve tested Soniclean and Sebo uprights in the past, but there are no current models in our latest upright tests.)

There are more than a dozen Shark uprights in our ratings, and you’ll see the best clustered near the top 10 make our recommended list.

Three upright brands—Sebo, Shark, and Miele—earn an Excellent rating for owner satisfaction, but Miele uprights earn only a middling Good rating for reliability. Still, that’s enough for Miele to keep its recommended eligibility—in fact, one Miele bagged model makes our top picks list.

All three of the upright brands that are not eligible for a recommendation—Bissell, Dirt Devil, and Eureka—earn a Fair rating for predicted reliability (none earn a Poor). Of the three, Dirt Devil and Eureka also get Poor ratings for owner satisfaction.

Lawn Tractors

Lawn tractors are your quintessential riding mower, with a big engine in front and a seat and steering wheel mounted over the cutting deck. They make up a whopping 64 percent of the riding mowers in CR’s survey purchased in 2020, far and away the most common type of riding mower owned by CR members.

And it turns out that an old marketing tagline is true: Nothing runs like a Deere. Among the nine lawn tractor brands in our survey results, John Deere is the only brand that was rated Excellent for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.

The runner-up is Husqvarna, which was rated Very Good for reliability and owner satisfaction. Two other brands, Cub Cadet and Simplicity, received Good ratings for predicted reliability and Very Good ratings for satisfaction.

Two other brands—Snapper and Troy-Bilt—earned Good ratings in both predicted reliability and satisfaction.

Murray lawn tractors are the only riding mowers to be knocked for reliability, receiving a Poor rating. For this reason, CR cannot recommend Murray lawn tractors at this point in time. Another brand, Poulan Pro, was rated Good for reliability but Poor for owner satisfaction. (Neither Murray nor Poulan Pro lawn tractor models are currently tested by CR.)

Short on style and features, this traditional configuration offers the best value. Only 5 percent of refrigerators in CR’s survey are top-freezers.

Top-freezers, as a category, have the highest predicted reliability. Despite these high marks, most top-freezer brands are rated low in terms of owner satisfaction.

Within the category, seven of the nine brands earned an Excellent rating for predicted reliability: Amana, Frigidaire, Kenmore, LG, Maytag, Samsung, and Whirlpool. But only LG received a positive owner satisfaction rating (earning a Very Good), making it the best top-freezer brand to choose.

GE and Hotpoint top-freezers got Very Good ratings for predicted reliability, but both brands received Poor ratings for owner satisfaction.

You see an ad online for a survey site that says something like “Earn up to $150 per hour taking surveys!

Even though it says “Up to,” you’re still thinking about that number, $150!

So you click and sign up for the site.

Confirmation email comes, you click on the link and verify your account.

You log in to your dashboard for the first time happy and excited to start making that money.

A quick glance at the available “survey” is all it takes to turn your excitement into disappointment.

“These are not surveys, this is just a list of other REAL paid survey panels!” you think to yourself.

This was exactly my reaction when I signed up for one of those sites.

Here’s the thing…

These sites are not actual survey panels themselves.

They don’t conduct market research studies at all.

They just give you a list of real survey companies that pay so you can join them.

Now, some of them may also pay you for signing up for those listed sites.

Because they earn affiliate commissions (it’s one of the ways MoneyPantry and almost every other site make money) from those survey sites for every new panelist they send them.

There is nothing wrong with that.

I just want to distinguish them from real survey panels so you don’t get confused.

I see ’em as sort of survey directories.

And I think you should join a few since they are free anyway.

Their lists may contain a few survey sites that you didn’t know about.

Overall, some of these sites may be a good tool to have in your arsenal if you want to take this to the next level and get service about making money as a survey taker.

The main issue I take with these sites is their outrages earning claims that you can “easily” earn $25 to $75 an hour taking surveys.

2019 Trust in Financial Services

The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer: Financial Services report indicates that trust in the sector is at its highest level since we started measuring it in 2012. But at 57 percent trust among the general population, financial services remains the least-trusted sector measured by the Trust Barometer. And despite modest gains broadly, more concerning to us in this year’s report is the re-emerging trend of diverging levels of trust between the mass population and informed public.

Trust inequality returns to record highs

The financial services sector has returned to record-high levels of trust inequality. While the informed public trust levels have increased significantly from 2012 (49 percent) to 2019 (67 percent), trust among the mass population, which stands at 55 percent, does not reflect the same improved outlook today. This 12-point trust gap between the informed public and the mass population mirrors the 12-point gap we observed just as recently as 2017, which was a record high then. This disparity occurs in the context of a “mass-class” divide and is in the double-digits in more than two-thirds of markets globally, increasingly reaching into developed nations with egalitarian heritages.

Lead by innovating for inclusion

The financial services industry has moved rapidly to innovate as digital insurgents threaten to take market share from incumbent brands. In light of the growing divergence in trust between publics, it’s important to recognize two equally important roles of innovation:

  • 73 percent believe it’s important for financial services to lead on creating and using emerging technologies that make doing business with them easier.
  • 70 percent believe it’s important for financial services to lead on social issues that make the world a better place for everyone.

Globally, the most important social issue for financial services companies to address is income inequality and financial security. Yet, the innovations designed to broaden access and help close the gap are lagging far behind traditional products and services in terms of trust.

As the industry continues its digital transformation, customer experience with an emphasis on integration is critical: The most useful innovation when it comes to choosing a financial services company is a platform that integrates all aspects of a customer’s financial life, selected by 53 percent of respondents in our study.

However, the most important innovations for financial services companies help make the system work for everyone:

  2. Fairer access to credit
  3. Financial inclusion for the un- and under-banked
  4. Digital gamification to advance financial literacy

Investing in employee trust is investing in your bottom line

Seventy-eight percent believe how a company treats its employees is one of the best indicators of its trustworthiness. Of all the relationships the public can turn to for guidance through turbulent times, one of the most critical to acknowledge is that of the employer and employee.

While the financial services sector is the least trusted, employees of financial services companies trust their employer to do the right thing more than employees of other sectors measured by the Edelman Trust Barometer.

For financial services companies, the potential dividends of this trust are significant. Trusting employees are far more likely to advocate on your behalf, stay loyal, be engaged and live your organization’s values, and be strongly committed to their job and the customers they serve.

What are the highest paying online surveys?

The highest paying online surveys are usually the longer surveys (taking 40 minutes or more to complete), or a survey that is looking for a very particular audience. They need people who fit very specific criteria, like being bilingual in Korean or English, owning a pet Boa Constrictor, having stage 1 cancer, or having 2 or more sets of twins or other multiples.

While always selecting the highest paying online survey opportunity may look attempting, these surveys can be harder to qualify for. You may get frustrated if you disqualify from the survey after completing a 5-minute screener.
