Joe’s Crab Shack Opens Manhattan Location

Popular chain Joe's Crab Shack has finally arrived in New York City.

New Yorkers have been subjected to commercials for Houston-based Joe’s Crab Shack, which has 120 locations in 28 states, for years now, without having the opportunity to eat at one within city limits. All that’s finally changing, as the company finally opened their first New York outpost this week on the corner of 125th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, in Harlem, Restaurant News Release is reporting.

The 10,000 square foot restaurant can accommodate 380 guests at a time, and employs about 170.

The seafood-oriented restaurant is best known for its laid-back style and crab pots seasoned with Southern spices. This new location reportedly offers a handful of special summer menu items, including pots finished with Corona beer. The restaurant will open at 11 a.m. daily, and will close at midnight Sunday through Thursday and at 2 a.m. on the weekends.

Joe’s is owned by Ignite Restaurant Group, which also runs Romano’s Macaroni Grill and Brick House Tavern + Tap.


Joe’s Crab Shack Tried Getting Rid of Tips. It Didn’t Last Long.

The day may come when you won’t have to figure out what 15 percent to 20 percent of your check is at the end of a meal, but the earliest experiments in eliminating tipping at American restaurants have proved to be less than conclusive.

In one closely watched case, Joe’s Crab Shack has decided to revert to accepting tips at most of its trial locations, six months after announcing that it would become the nation’s first major restaurant chain to test a no-tipping policy at 18 locations.

The casual seafood chain, which is based in Houston and has more than 130 restaurants nationwide, raised its menu prices at the test sites and said it gave higher, fixed wages to its staff. At the time, Ray Blanchette, then the chief executive of its parent company, Ignite Restaurant Group, called tipping “an antiquated model.”

But Bob Merritt, the new chief executive, announced in a conference call with investors and analysts last week that the company was cutting back the experiment and that it would continue at just four restaurants, according to Nation’s Restaurant News.

Company research had found that 60 percent of the restaurants’ customers disliked the change in tipping, Mr. Merritt said. They wanted to inspire good service with their tips and they didn’t trust management to pass on the money to its employees, he said.

“The system has to change at some point, but our customers and staff spoke very loudly,” Mr. Merritt said. “And a lot of them voted with their feet.”

The number of customers at the no-tip locations dropped 8 percent to 10 percent on average, he said.

Joe’s Crab Shack is not the only restaurant returning to tips. Fedora, a Greenwich Village restaurant owned by Gabriel Stulman, announced Monday that it would also discard its no-tipping policy, which it had begun four months ago.

“While we made the determination that a gratuity-free system does not work for our business at this time, we continue to believe that it has the potential to change hospitality for the better,” Mr. Stulman wrote in a letter to diners. “We hope it’s the future for more restaurants, including our own.”

Some employees sued for labor law violations

It's never a good sign when your staff is so unhappy, they get the US legal system involved. But that's exactly what happened at a Joe's Crab Shack location in San Francisco in 2014, when nine very disgruntled former Joe's Crab Shack workers sued the chain for not abiding by labor laws.

Among the claims from the back of the house employees were accusations that the management at this Joe's refused to grant proper breaks, manipulated the record of their hours to avoid paying overtime, and didn't reimburse them for the cost of uniforms. What's even more alarming, allegedly, some of the workers were terminated when they tried to voice their concern about the labor law violations.

The saying has always been that any press is good press. that's not necessarily the case when it's the kind of press where your employees publicly shame you for treating them poorly. This unfortunate PR might not have sat well with folks who were deciding what seafood chain to choose for a night out, making it another possible factor in Joe's demise.

North Texas Joe's Crab Shack locations remain open as parent seeks bankruptcy protection

Managers at several North Texas locations of the Joe's Crab Shack chain reported "business as usual" Tuesday, despite the early-morning bankruptcy filing of the brand's parent company.

Ignite Restaurant Group, which also owns the Brick House Tavern + Tap brand, said late Tuesday the bankruptcy filing was part of a deal in which both Joe's Crab Shack and Brick House will likely be purchased by an affiliate of Kelly Companies, a San Diego-based private equity firm.

Kelly Investment Group bought Champps and Fox & Hound out of bankruptcy last year, according to a trade publication.

Ignite will hold an auction giving other companies a chance to bid. It expects the sale to be completed within 90 days.

Officials with Ignite did not respond to requests for comment.

But it said in a statement, that "both Joe's Crab Shack and Brick House Tavern + Tap restaurants will remain open and operating as usual, and Ignite customers can expect to continue to enjoy the same great food and service that they have come to expect from our brands."

Several managers of individual restaurants confirmed that, for now, they plan to stay open.

The bankruptcy case, filed in the Southern District of Texas, applies to the parent and affiliates including Joe's Crab Shack Holdings Inc., Ignite Restaurants, Ignite, Ignite Group and IRG.

The parent company has seen slumping sales in recent months.

In its most recent financial report, for the quarter that ended last September, same store sales fell by nearly 7 percent companywide, which includes a 6.5 percent decrease at Joe's Crab Shack and an 8.9 percent decrease at Brick House Tavern + Tap. The loss from continuing operations was $15.2 million.

Changing consumers tastes and oversaturation have hurt the restaurant industry, leading to a number of high-profile bankruptcies, including Black-Eyed Pea and Sweet Tomatoes/Souplantation.

LA's 'Cafe Gratitude' and Other Restaurants Offering Steep Meatless Monday Deals

Crab Pot is much better, but it may not be the best choice for a work lunch - it can be pretty messy with all the hammering and cracking of crab shells. It's really a better place for a long, leisurely meal, especially when the weather is nice and warm outside.

I second the Crab Pot. Joe's is a formulaic chain restaurant. Crab Pot has a nice lunch menu, and the setting right alongside the marina is delightful.

Joe's Crab Shack is fine, but warning: it is very loud. Have Fun!

If it's anything like the Joe's in Newport, avoid it. Truly terrible food & forced frivolity which is fine when you're celebrating a 21st birthday or something like that, but not for an office lunch.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who responded.

My group of 9 people eventually decided on Joe's Crab Shack (I had no say in the matter having been out of the office at the time).

I got a shrimp combination plate (scampi, crab stuffed shrimp, and grilled shrimp). The food was so-so at best. The one notable exception was the appetizers we ordered - jalapenos stuffed with cheese and crab, battered and deep fried. I thought these were excellent (especially with the beer I had). The atmosphere was pretty much as Torta Basillica noted "Truly terrible food & forced frivolity which is fine when you're celebrating a 21st birthday or something like that, but not for an office lunch." As LBQT noted, it was LOUD.

Overall, I would not return, except to have a few beers and some of those jalapeno/crab poppers.
